Executive Medical Director

The UNM Medical Group, Inc. is hiring an Executive Medical Director. This is a unique opportunity for an APP or Physician looking to expand their career in a part-time to full-time Monday-Friday day shift located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This position will include 0.5-0.8FTE administrative time plus additional clinical time up to 1.0FTE.

Summary:

The Executive Medical Director (EMD) will report to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the UNM Medical Group and will be dyad partner to the Executive Director of Clinical Operations for the UNM Medical Group Clinics. They work collaboratively with University Hospital, UNM Health System, Sandoval Regional Medical Center and the School of Medicine to facilitate and support the mission and vision of the UNM Medical Group. They will work with Medical Group leadership, department chairs, and staff to maximize clinician and staff productivity, safety, quality, and cost effectiveness in the UNM Medical Group Clinics. Responsible for the leadership, management, and efficient performance of all Clinic Operations, UNMMG Facilities and Lean process management and workflow. Works to maximize clinical charge capture and billings while maintaining compliance. Assists medical directors in analyzing productivity and other data and managing the clinical practice. Ensures quality of care through development and oversight of quality standards and develops processes and practices which will result in efficiency, cost effectiveness and optimal performance in Clinic Operations. Develops and ensures adherence to policies and procedures throughout all areas of responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications of an Executive Medical Director:

MD/DO degree from an accredited school of medicine and Board certified or equivalent in applicable specialty. NP or PA degree will also be considered. Minimum of 10 years post-graduate experience in direct patient care. Minimum of 5 years of leadership in ambulatory healthcare.

Active clinical practice in the UNM Health System will be required in the FTE outside of the .5-.8 administrative FTE. Candidates must hold and maintain a current, unrestricted clinical license in the state of New Mexico. State of New Mexico and Federal DEA Certification; Medical Specialty License or Certification; Board Certified or Board Eligible in specified area of medical specialty. Completed degree from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Verification of education and licensure (if applicable) will be required, if not already performed, if selected for hire.

Duties and Responsibilities of an Executive Medical Director:

  1. Participates in key decision making regarding overall planning, work redesign, and staff development associated with implementing changes in patient care delivery in UNM Medical Group Clinics. Directs activities of all UNMMG Clinic Operations’ clinics, services and programs with Executive Director of Clinical Operations in accordance with UNMMG policies and objectives; ensures that the mission, values and strategic objectives are integrated into projects and programs. Helps evaluate new business plans to support new programs and expansion proposals in UNM Medical Group clinical platform.
  2. Investigates patient and staff complaints and recommends solutions with help from UNM Medical Group Medical Director and Practice Managers.
  3. Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies governing health care delivery and the rules of accrediting bodies by continually monitoring appropriate organizational operations, programs, and physical properties in UNM Medical Group Clinics; initiates changes where required and ensures that they are communicated and implemented.
  4. Ensures that patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols are followed throughout the ambulatory care system; proactively works to improve patient safety by refining policies, identifying, reporting and correcting environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk. Participates in UNMMG's Quality Council, UNMMG Medical Director meetings, UNM Medical Group Practice Oversight Committee and promotes a culture of quality in all activities and contacts, educates and informs personnel regarding quality activities as appropriate. Leads (with CMO) the UNMMG Credentialing workgroup meeting monthly and reports on credentialing and privileging at Practice Oversight Committee.
  5. In partnership with the (CMO) of UNM Medical Group, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of UNM Medical Group, the Executive Director of Clinical Operations, Director, Clinical Operations Group, the Director of Nursing in UNM Medical Group and the Director of Quality in UNM Medical Group to provide system leadership to meet the strategies, goals and performance targets of the Institution’s mission, strategic plan and workforce needs.
  6. Partners with the CEO, CMO, Medical Directors and Practice Managers and UNM Medical Group Academic Engagement Committee to support education and research. Projects should be proposed to Executive Medical Director and Executive Director of Clinical Operations for approval by clinic medical director and practice manager. These projects should be presented to Practice Oversight Committee for awareness.
  7. Leads by example to help create an experience of patient centered care.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
