Under general supervision, the Medical Radiation Dosimetrist provides dosimetry support to develop a patient's treatment plan to deliver a radiotherapy dose based on a Physician's written directive. The ability to calculate and interpret treatment plans and evaluate the dose delivered to normal tissues is a critical component of the position. UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center participates in multiple clinical protocols, both national and internal. In addition, participation in both teaching and research is a component of this position, as expected in a typical University setting. Our team consists of five CMD's working in close collaboration with five Physicists and three Radiation Oncologists to deliver exceptional patient care. Our center has been re-awarded itsí NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center status and Radiation Oncology will be expanding to a single vendor solution with 3-5 linear accelerators in the near future.

Summary

Under indirect supervision, performs a variety of treatment planning and quality assurance services related to radiation therapy. Participates in related research and the development of new radiation therapy procedures.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development of policy and procedures for treatment planning to improve accuracy and efficiency in our treatment planning process

  • Participates in departmental performance quality improvement (PQI) studies to improve various aspects of clinical operations.

  • Ensures all regulatory guidelines are followed, for example, protocol guidelines.

  • Generates patient treatment plans for all available treatment planning systems; views imaging data for positions and size of lesions, develops patient contours, creates/calculates patient treatment plans, evaluates the treatment plan's adherence to prescribed dose constraints.

  • Evaluates treatment plans for potential errors using established QA checklists. Evaluates existing QA checklists for applicability, accuracy, and efficiency.

  • Prepares sealed radioactive sources and operates specialized equipment to assist in brachytherapy treatments of patients.

  • Assists in the training and education of a variety of students, including radiation therapy students, physics students, and medical students.

  • Participates in a patient's treatment planning simulation; helping to determine the necessary immobilization devices and other treatment needs.

  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

  • Participates in clinical and departmental research, including the development of new radiation therapy procedures, protocol adherence, and submission, physics, retrospective studies, etc.

 

Minimum Job Requirements

Current Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD) accreditation or eligibility required. Candidates who have been eligible but are not certified for three or more years will not be considered. One year of clinical dosimetry experience is preferred. Verification of education and licensure will be required if selected for hire.
